Abortive therapy

Abortive therapy, also known as acute or rescue therapy, refers to the treatment given to stop or alleviate the symptoms of a medical condition or disorder during an acute episode. This type of therapy is commonly used in conditions such as migraines, seizures, asthma attacks, and allergic reactions.

The goal of abortive therapy is to provide immediate relief and prevent the condition from progressing further. It typically involves the administration of medications or procedures that act quickly to alleviate symptoms. Abortive therapy is often used in conjunction with preventive therapy, which aims to reduce the frequency and severity of future episodes.

Here are a few examples of abortive therapies for specific conditions:

  1. Migraines: Triptans, such as sumatriptan or rizatriptan, are commonly used to relieve the pain and associated symptoms of migraines. These medications work by constricting blood vessels in the brain and blocking pain signals.

  2. Seizures: During an acute seizure episode, medications like benzodiazepines (e.g., diazepam or lorazepam) may be administered to quickly stop the seizure activity and prevent further complications.

  3. Asthma attacks: Short-acting bronchodilators, such as albuterol, are frequently used to quickly open up the airways during an asthma attack, providing immediate relief and restoring normal breathing.

  4. Allergic reactions: In severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), epinephrine is the primary abortive therapy. It rapidly reverses the symptoms by constricting blood vessels, relaxing airway muscles, and suppressing the release of allergic mediators.

It's important to note that abortive therapy is typically intended for short-term use to manage acute symptoms. For chronic or recurrent conditions, long-term preventive measures may be necessary to reduce the frequency and severity of episodes. If you require abortive therapy for a specific condition, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and guidance.
