Shiatsu therapy

Shiatsu therapy is a form of therapeutic bodywork that originated in Japan. It is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine and uses finger pressure, along with other techniques, to stimulate the body's natural healing abilities.

The word "shiatsu" translates to "finger pressure" in Japanese, which reflects the main technique used in this therapy. Practitioners apply pressure to specific points on the body, known as acupressure points or meridians, using their fingers, palms, elbows, or even knees and feet. The pressure is typically rhythmic and sustained, and it may be combined with stretching, joint mobilization, and other manual techniques.

The underlying philosophy of shiatsu is based on the concept of qi (pronounced "chee"), which is believed to flow through the body along specific pathways known as meridians. According to traditional Chinese medicine, imbalances or blockages in the flow of qi can lead to physical or emotional discomfort and health problems. By applying pressure to the meridians and acupressure points, shiatsu aims to restore the smooth flow of qi and promote overall well-being.

Shiatsu therapy is performed with the client fully clothed, typically on a mat or futon on the floor. It is often described as a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating experience. People seek shiatsu for various reasons, including stress reduction, pain relief, relaxation, improved circulation, enhanced energy flow, and overall balance and harmony in the body.

It's important to note that while shiatsu therapy can be beneficial for many people, it may not be suitable for everyone. It is generally safe, but individuals with certain health conditions or specific concerns should consult with a qualified shiatsu practitioner or their healthcare provider before receiving treatment.

Shiatsu therapy is often practiced by trained and certified shiatsu practitioners or bodyworkers who have undergone specialized training in this modality. If you are interested in trying shiatsu, it is recommended to seek a qualified practitioner who can provide a safe and effective treatment.
